Title Or Value?
Dear Leader,
Happy New Week.
I trust this meets you in pursuit of growth.
If you live in Nigeria, you will agree with me that our culture is one that places value on titles. That is why for example, you will see people pay a lot of money to get a “chieftaincy” or “Honorary Doctorate” so they can put a “Dr.” to their name.
By default we are a product of our culture, so I understand why it is a lot of struggle for people to easily accept that you don’t need a title to be a leader. But the truth is that titles are ultimately empty, and you should learn to see it that way.
If your major career goal is to gain certain titles or attain certain positions before you see yourself as a leader, you are not setting yourself up for the best life that you can live and can be.
Titles are good, but the person you are and the quality of work you produce is really what matters. If your work is significant and adds value to people and the organisation you work for, then it doesn’t need to rest on a title.
Your position or title is the lowest level of influence. Your desire should be to grow, keep growing and consistently create a positive change in your organisation.
A position is not a worthy destination of your life and your career, it can be a starting point or part of the journey but it shouldn’t be your priority.
You are more than your titles. You are more than that position.
How do you contribute to your team and organisation? Think and write it down this week.
Until next time,
I’m rooting for you.
Great Owete
