Dear Leader,
I trust this meets you in pursuit of wisdom.
I remember back on campus when I was schooling at DELSU, I attended a lot of events - I could say I attended all the inspirational events, leadership conference, career summit that happened in DELSU from 2010 till I graduated. Sometimes I travelled from my campus to Warri to attend a few events happening in the city.
That was where I met Fela Durotoye who became a role model to me.
In some of these events, I had my Aha moment, in other events, I simply learnt and broadened my horizon. But I had one thing - FOCUS.
As I listened to different speakers, a few of them resonated with me, I got clarity around what my next steps should be after school. Attending events didn’t give me purpose, but it guided my search for knowledge and reaffirmed some of my interest and exposed me to some insight to building a successful career.
It has been said that in life you get what you focus on.
My friend, that statement is true. That state applies to getting a new job, building a business or winning a promotion or award, etc.
Nobody stumbles on success.
In my 200 level on campus, after listening to people like Fela Durotoye & Niyi Adesanya, I became committed to playing in the human capital development industry, and since then I have been focused on it.
While others were attending “night clubs” and having a nice time, I was preparing for my future. I was very selective in what I did and what I got involved in on campus. While others were worried if they would get a job after school, I was so sure that I would work in a consulting firm. I was focused and prepared my mind for it. Fast forward today, the result is evident.
Why am I sharing this with you?
At any stage of your life, to achieve career success, you need FOCUS. If you want to achieve career success, you must decide now from the deepest place of your heart to have success in your life - regardless of what the statistics say.
You can’t say you want to be a successful entrepreneur and you are spending your time going to night clubs and beaches. I’m not judging! But we had many of them on campus years ago who played away their 4 years. Please, I’m not judging.
I speak a lot at campus events and I see many people making similar mistakes. Please, stop doing what does not align with where you want to be in future. You don’t arrive at the “future”, you grow into the future.
Your “future self” you imagine should decide the events you engage in today, because there is no future without today.
You can only get what you focus on. So, Feed your FOCUS and starve your distractions.
That’s my message for you this week - Stay Focused.
I’m rooting for you,
Great Owete
